Earlier this week, Cherwell District Council were designated by the Secretary of State, meaning that applicants for major developments can continue to apply to Cherwell District Council, or they can choose to apply directly to the Planning Inspectorate (PINS) for a decision. It is likely that major developers will choose to skip the opportunity for their plans to be considered by those with local knowledge and this worries many Oxfordshire residents and those from surrounding counties too.
NORA is concerned that the cumulative impact of the numerous large-scale developments, proposed within a relatively small area of Cherwell, will be overwhelming. Projects including Puy du Fou, the Strategic Rail Interchange, Hawkwell Village, the continued expansion of housing at Heyford, and the Tritax and Albion warehouse developments together represent an unprecedented level of change to our local communities, countryside, infrastructure and environment.

This isn’t about being “anti-development”. It’s about making sure development is deliverable, properly resourced, and doesn’t overwhelm communities.
Our campaigning is already making a difference. Proposals for a new town and mega-warehouses in North Oxfordshire have, so far, been rejected (coming to appeal in September). Planning authorities are beginning to take notice of this call for the combined impact of multiple development proposals to be considered together, rather than in isolation. This proves that your voice really can make a difference.
