Oxfordshire Electric Vehicle car club pilot launches
Electric Vehicle (EV) car club pilot extended
A countywide car sharing pilot scheme is being extended until September 2024. EV car club vehicles in the scheme can be hired from as little as £5.95 per hour, including insurance, plus 12p per electric mile.
An Oxfordshire-wide pilot of electric vehicle (EV) car clubs has begun, with fourteen new car club EVs being launched across Abingdon, Banbury, Bicester, Eynsham, Henley, Kidlington, Oxford, Thame, Witney, Wallingford and Wantage. These shared vehicles – operated by CoWheels, Enterprise CarClub and Thame EV Hire Club – will be available for people to use on a pay-per-use basis that provides a convenient and affordable alternative to individual car ownership, as well as providing an opportunity for petrol and diesel drivers to try an EV without any long-term commitment.
Oxfordshire County Council has coordinated the pilot and facilitated the arrangements between participating councils, car club operators and chargepoint operators. The EV car club vehicles will mainly be based at Park and Charge hubs in District Council car parks, and Oxford City Council are also introducing a new EV car club based at the Energy SuperHub at Redbridge Park and Ride.
Whilst car clubs have seen great success within Oxford, little has been tested outside of the City. The aim of this pilot project is to demonstrate the demand for car clubs in more urban and rural areas and test the business models for non-city EV car clubs. The hope is that if successful this pilot will help inform future EV car club roll-out strategy for the County and pave the way for more EV car clubs across Oxfordshire in the future.

Electric Car Guide is a guidance site for new EV owners. We support owners with educational guides and resources to help them transition from petrol cars to electric cars.
Our site is non-commercial and free to use, we are asking councils to please share it with communities as a resource on your website.The shift towards electric vehicles is a critical issue affecting our local communities and the global environment and many people are still lacking awareness about the technology and how to adopt it.
