Villagers were sad to hear the news of the death of Penny who, along with Robin and their sons Jo and Tom, moved to Springhill House in the 1990s.
Penny’s ambition was to transform the garden at Spring Hill House into a place of interest and beauty, which she achieved, and it was admired by many visitors.
She took part in countless village fund raising events, offering her garden for village Open Gardens which she helped to organise, and the house for Safari Suppers. She supported the Horticultural Society’s Annual Flower Show and Fete. She was a founder member in 1995 of Shelswell Garden Club which was held monthly in the village hall and introduced members to some exceptional speakers. Penny held an Annual Plant Sale and Cake Stall in her garden which always included Penny’s home-made bread.
Penny joined Hethe PCC in 1996 and was a Church Warden from 1997 to 2002. She was instrumental in the re-building of the eastern boundary wall. She remained as a valued PCC member up to March 2007 when it was recorded that the PCC “wished to record how grateful they were for Penny’s dedication in fund-raising over the years”.
She was enormously proud of Robin and their two sons and loved the grandchildren, but aches and pains meant she had to give up walking the dog and strenuous gardening.
Penny will be missed by those who lived around her. She was a “fun person to know”.
