Basic Life support Awareness Training
The first village defib training took place at the Village Hall in Hethe on 22nd July.
A message from Jean Ramsey, a Parish Councillor:
The Parish Council are in negotiations with South Central Ambulance Service to organise training in how to use our new defibrillator. They offer a community training program which normally lasts around two hours. It covers:
- finding the patient;
- calling 999;
- the recovery position;
- CPR and using a defibrillator.
They suggest groups of no more than 20 in number. That is to ensure that everyone can see the defibrillator being used and also practice CPR on a mannequin. It is expected that the community will make a donation to the volunteers who run this training.
We are looking to run this training on a Monday evening, hopefully in July.
If you would like to take part, please can you give your name to a member of the Parish Council whose details appear on the website.
We we can then have a waiting list and we can let you know the details in due course.

The defibrillator is installed in the porch of St Edmund & St George Church. It is ready for use in an emergency.
Advice from the British Heart Foundation:
A defibrillator is a device that gives a jolt of energy to the heart. It helps get the heart beating again when someone is in cardiac arrest and their heart has stopped.
- Anyone can use a defibrillator. You do not need training. Once you turn it on, it will give clear step-by-step voice instructions.
- Many defibrillators also have visual prompts and images showing how to use it.
- The device checks the person’s heart rhythm and will only tell you to give them a shock if it’s needed. You cannot shock yourself or someone else accidentally.
To get access to the defibrillator, Dial 999 and give your location – ie St Edmund & St George Church, Hethe, OX27 8ES. The emergency call handler will give you an access code to open the cabinet. Press the green button to switch on the defibrillator and follow the instructions.
